Which Saatva Mattress Does a Chiropractor Recommend for Back Support?

Dr. Grant Radermacher of Ascent Chiropractic recommends the Saatva Classic for most patients seeking back support. This guide explains why the Classic is the primary choice, how its lumbar zone technology works, and when the Saatva Rx might be a better fit. We cover firmness selection, construction details, and practical buying steps to help you make an informed decision.

The Chiropractor Recommendation

Ascent Chiropractic, located in Brookfield, Wisconsin, participates in the Saatva practitioner partner program. Dr. Grant Radermacher, DC, personally recommends Saatva mattresses for patients dealing with back discomfort. The primary recommendation is the Saatva Classic. This model is favored because it offers a balance of cushioning and support that suits a wide range of sleep positions. It is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it provides a versatile starting point for most people.

Lumbar Zone Technology

Lumbar zone technology is a design feature that provides targeted support to the lower back area. In the Saatva Classic, this is achieved through a reinforced center region of the mattress. This area is designed to offer slightly more support than the rest of the bed, helping to keep the spine in a neutral position. This is particularly useful for back sleepers who need extra stability in the lumbar region.

How It Works in the Classic

Why It Matters for Back Support

Research indicates that mattress stiffness can affect spinal alignment. A mattress that is too soft may allow the hips to sink, causing the spine to curve unnaturally. A mattress that is too firm may create pressure points at the shoulders and hips. The lumbar zone in the Classic aims to strike a balance, providing enough give for comfort but enough support for alignment. This makes it a strong candidate for individuals with mild to moderate back issues. according to The Influence of

Choosing the Right Firmness

Firmness is a subjective experience, but there are general guidelines to help you choose. The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Luxury Firm is the most popular choice and is often recommended for back sleepers. It provides a balance of cushioning and support. Plush Soft is better for side sleepers who need more pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. Firm is suitable for those who prefer a harder surface or sleep on their stomachs.

Matching Firmness to Sleep Position

Your sleep position is the most important factor in choosing firmness. Back sleepers generally do well with medium to firm mattresses. Side sleepers often prefer softer options to accommodate the curves of the body. Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent the hips from sinking. If you share a bed with a partner who has different preferences, consider the Luxury Firm option as a compromise. It is the middle ground that works for most people.

Testing the Feel

It is difficult to judge firmness from a description alone. If possible, try the mattress in a showroom. Lie down in your usual sleep position for at least ten minutes. Pay attention to how your spine feels. If you feel supported but not pressed into the mattress, it is likely a good fit. Remember that the 365-night home trial allows you to test the mattress in your own home, which is the most accurate way to assess comfort.

Saatva Classic vs. Saatva Rx

While the Classic is the primary recommendation, the Saatva Rx is another option to consider. The Rx is designed specifically for people with chronic back and joint conditions. It features a foam-and-coil construction that emphasizes pressure relief. The main difference is that the Rx comes in a single Supportive Plush feel, whereas the Classic offers three firmness choices.

When to Choose the Rx

Consider the Rx if cushioning is your top priority. It is marketed for individuals who need extra relief from pressure points. If you have specific joint issues or find that the Classic feels too firm for your body, the Rx may be a better fit. However, it is important to note that the Rx is not a prescription treatment. It is a comfort-focused mattress that may help with general back discomfort.

Construction and Support Details

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with a unique construction. It features a Euro pillow top made with organic cotton, which provides a cushioned surface. Beneath the pillow top, there are two layers of coils. The top layer is thinner and more responsive, while the bottom layer is thicker and provides structural support. This dual-coil design is what gives the Classic its signature bounce and responsiveness.

Reinforced Edges

Another important feature is the reinforced edge support. Many mattresses have weak edges that collapse when you sit on them. The Classic has a reinforced perimeter that allows you to sit on the edge without feeling like you will fall off. This is useful for getting in and out of bed, especially for older adults or those with mobility issues. It also maximizes the usable sleeping surface of the bed.

Material Quality

Saatva uses high-quality materials in the Classic. The cover is made with organic cotton, which is breathable and durable. The coils are made from steel, which provides long-lasting support. The mattress is designed to be durable and maintain its shape over time. This is important for a mattress that you will use every night for many years.
